Software Freedom Day Philippines

logo-theme.jpeg
Software Freedom Day Philippines is part of the global SFD celebration of free and open source software. It carries SFD's mission to "educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business -- in short, everywhere!"

From 2004 at the University of the Philippines (UP), 2005 at Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 2007 at the DOST - Advanced Science and Technology Institute, 2008 at the University of Makati, 2009 at the University of Santo Tomas (UST), 2010 at UP and for 2011, again at UST - the Philippine Celebration of Software Freedom Day introduced Free and Open Source Software to a wide number students, enthusiasts and common computer users.

The FOSS community shares its role in advancing the Filipino people's right to freedom of information in this year's SFD celebration, with the theme "FOSS: Enabling Freedom of Information". The event included parallel plenary sessions on topics and issues regarding FOSS in the morning, followed by breakout sessions in the afternoon featuring introductory trainings on FOSS applications and concepts.

Irog, a third-year Computer Science student, together with some other classmates were also part of the SFD 2009 organizing team. They shared their SFD 2009 experiences that contributed helped us out with the planning.

Pre-SFD Burn Fest | September 14, 2011

Volunteers from the Taguig City University gave hands to reproduce Ubuntu CDs from Software Freedom International and offline Wikipedia from Wikimedia Philippines which will be distributed on the event.

burn3.jpg burn4.jpg

These student volunteers were really used to sleep deprivation (projects, theses... student life! :D) They burnt copies of Ubuntuand offline Wikipedia overnight!

The kids formed “SFI – SFD!” using the CD sticker labels. They're creative with their spare time, huh? :)

Drafted details were posted around the office walls which became our temporary wallpapers! :)

Almondz reigned the office table, preparing the certificates for the speakers, organizers and participants.

Reiko almost halved herself while helping in admin operations and handling the online registration at same time (notice that she's in front of a desktop unit, but seems like she holds a laptop under. :D)

Jed was busy doing the freedom wall's layout. He's always excited to make design for stuffs. Thus, how happy he was when the tarpaulin arrived. He's proud of his output. :)

The Team – the night before the big day! Preparing the event must-haves, finalizing everything.

ACTUAL EVENT (September 17, 2011)
REGISTRATION
s24.jpg
The registration was set to open at 8AM. An hour before, we already started receiving text messages from participants that they're stranded at the university gate. Reason: Hundreds of students lining up for SFD!
s25.jpgs26.jpg
s27.jpg

The online registration was very helpful. We were able to save time because instead of each participant writing their info, they just need to give their tickets which they received upon registering online.Everybody wears smile in the registration lanes.

s29.jpgs30.jpg

Though we have warned that walk-in participants may not be ensured of seats, a lot of them still came to the event. They have been willing to stand up the whole time just to witness this year's SFD celebration.
